# Nuño Gómez Village: A Rural Coliving Story in Toledo

December 13, 2025

By Niko · Head of Making Cool Stuff

The rural coliving story of Nuño Gómez village: how four friends from Berlin and Madrid built Hamlet's Friends in the Sierra de San Vicente, Toledo, Spain.

Nuño Gómez is a village of about 100 people in Toledo province, 110 km west of Madrid. In 2021, four friends from Spain and Germany decided to build a coliving and coworking space in it. This is how that happened, and why a village that small was the point rather than a compromise.

## Four friends, two cities, one slightly mad idea

Two of us were in Berlin, two in Madrid, and all four were tired of the same thing. Not tired enough for a holiday. Tired of a week that was mostly commuting and meetings about meetings, with the interesting part squeezed into whatever was left. The plan we came up with was equal parts conviction and naivety, which is roughly the right ratio for anything worth doing.

We wanted somewhere you could live well, work properly and learn your neighbours' names. Countryside as the place you actually live, not a backdrop you photograph on Saturday and leave on Sunday.

## Finding Nuño Gómez, a village in the Sierra de San Vicente

The search ended in Nuño Gómez, in the hills of the province of Toledo, at the heart of the Sierra de San Vicente. What we found was a piece of land with old wooden cabins on it, greenery on every side and nothing to listen to but the countryside. On paper it was a property listing. In person it was obviously the place.

Nuño Gómez is the kind of place city people forget still exists. A handful of streets, a church, neighbours who greet you by name inside a week, and the settled quiet of somewhere that has been getting on with life for centuries. The Sierra de San Vicente rises around it: granite peaks, holm-oak dehesas, cork oaks, and walking trails that go on far longer than your legs will. Spring puts wildflowers across the hills, autumn turns the oaks gold, and summer evenings belong outdoors at a long table.

## An hour from Madrid, and nothing like it

This is the part that surprises people. The village feels remote and isn't. It sits about 110 km from Madrid, an hour and fifteen minutes by car, and Talavera de la Reina covers trains, shops and anything you need in a hurry. Quiet rural Spain, with a capital city still within reach. A few things worth knowing:

- About 110 km and roughly 1h15 by car from Madrid. Close enough for a weekend, far enough that you stop checking the time.
- Talavera de la Reina nearby for trains, supermarkets and the rest of it, so you are never stranded for the basics.
- Dual 600 Mbps fibre lines. A rural office that drops your call halfway through a meeting is a nice photo, not an office.
- Cabins and rooms, a shared kitchen, and a long table where people who met that morning end up eating together.

The fibre is not a footnote. The whole idea falls apart if you cannot actually work here, so we took the connection as seriously as the view. Two pages cover the rest.

## From paintbrushes to a community

Then came the to-do list. Paintbrushes, hammers, optimism, and the old cabins one at a time. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months, and somewhere in the dust the idea got sharper: a house where the people who came to work would end up knowing each other, and would come back for that as much as for the desk.

That is roughly where things stand now. Guests are in the cabins, the coworking has people from all over in it, El Molino cooks the food of the region, and the conversations around the long table are the ones we pictured back when none of this existed. Hamlet's Friends has a 5.0 rating across 183 Google reviews. We check it more often than we admit.

## Come and stay in Nuño Gómez

A quiet week of focused work, a longer stretch of rural coliving, a season in the Sierra de San Vicente. The cabins and rooms handle all three, and the difference is mostly how long it takes before you stop reaching for your phone at breakfast. Bring the laptop. The dinner conversations are the part nobody plans for.

## Frequently asked questions

How big is Nuño Gómez?

About 100 people. That is small enough that the coworking changed something in the village, and small enough that everybody noticed when it opened.

Why here and not somewhere better connected?

It is connected: 110 km and about 1h15 from Madrid on the A-5, with Talavera de la Reina 20 minutes away. What it also has is silence, the Sierra de San Vicente and prices a city cannot offer.

What does the project mean for the village?

We buy from local producers, employ people from the region, and bring visitors to a place that was losing them. Rural depopulation is the backdrop to everything here.
