We chose Nuño Gómez because it was quiet enough to think in and still close enough to Madrid that people would actually come. It is 110 km from the city, about 1h15 by car, a village of roughly 100 people at the foot of the Sierra de San Vicente. And the fibre works, which turned out to be the hard part. That is the short version. The long one involves a lot of villages that looked perfect in photographs and then failed on something dull, usually the internet. Here is what we were weighing up, and what it actually takes to run a coworking and coliving space this far out. ## Why this village in particular Nuño Gómez sits in the province of Toledo, in the Sierra de San Vicente, where the central plain starts folding into mountains. The scenery helped: granite hills, oak woods, a church bell that still keeps the time. What decided it was that the village is still lived in. People here say good morning to strangers. Plenty of equally pretty villages nearby are half empty with the bar shut, and once that happens there is nothing for a guest to walk out into. Four things settled it: - Close to Madrid without being a suburb of it. Roughly 110 km, about 1h15 by car, with Talavera de la Reina as the nearest proper town for trains, supermarkets and whatever you forgot to pack. - Nature starts at the front door. Hiking without driving anywhere first, rivers and pools in summer, and a night sky that still has stars in it. - A village that wanted us here. The neighbours, the village restaurant, the people we buy food from. We could build everything else on this list. Not that. - Room to build properly. Cabins, rooms and shared space, with enough left over to grow into without turning the place into a resort. ## The boring part that actually matters: the internet This is where most rural coworking dreams quietly die. A beautiful farmhouse with one bar of signal is a holiday, not a workplace. So we checked the fibre before we let ourselves like the view.
